Framing begins

Not that much has happened the last few days. We got the lien waivers from the excavator and surveyor. It rained over the weekend and the basement filled with 4" of water. On Monday we discovered that Paul was a dope and left the camera out on the lot on Friday and it sat in the mud and rain all weekend, so now we have to buy a new camera. That was dumb.

Paul called Waste Management on Monday for a 20 yard container for trash. It arrived the next day without incident. Also we ordered five more 24x36 copies of the plan for future contractors. $90 plus tax for that. Sheesh.

Met a retaining wall specialist from Stonewall Builders (clever. :-) on Monday to discuss the large retaining wall that will be necessary so that the ridge from which many of these pictures were taken doesn't erode into our back yard, and the work that will be necessary in the egress window well. He will get us quotes. He asked about drainage for the window well as there is no stone there. Hmm. No idea. Need to ask somebody about that. Don't know whom though.

Anyway. So all the good stuff happened today. Paul went to the lot at 7:30 to meet Shawn and his crew from Titan Construction and provide them a plan copy, and they went to work. Unfortunately that meant we missed all the good stuff. By the time Paul got home from work they were just about done. The main beam, the poles, the sill plate, floor joists and floor boards are all in. Paul snapped this picture with his camera phone. When we get a new camera we'll try to grab some pictures inside the foundation.

It looks really different now. Kathy thinks it's too small. :-) It'll look bigger when the walls go up tomorrow, assuming that it won't rain (bad assumption, storms are scheduled.)

Shawn also informed us that the concrete company neglected to pour a small footing inside the "L" of the basement stairs. 4 foot long. No big deal, just needs to be done. We'll have to let them know about it. He also informed us that he was pleased to find the foundation was nice and square.

We have yet to find anyone who has something good to say about the concrete company we hired. Dammit. (Sorry.) Why does nobody tell us this stuff. I think we will have a word with President Homes about their continued existence on the subcontractor list President provided along with a "gentle" (i.e. fish slap to the chops) hint that people who are building their first house just might appreciate a little bit of extra help choosing subs.

Debbie called from the title company in the morning to tell us the money for the draw was in. Paul went on his lunch hour to pick it up. It is important that every cent be documented with receipts. We forgot to charge for the construction insurance and the print copies. Have to get that next time.....

Ah well. Day's over, gotta get up and do it again tomorrow.
